Frequently Asked Questions
What are the school hours?
All levels enter at 8:05 am Monday through Friday. K3 finishes the school day at 12:30 pm, and the rest of the students finish at 3:00 pm. The first Wednesday afternoon of each month is dedicated to professional development sessions for teachers, and so all students finish classes at 12:00 noon on those days.
What diplomas will my child receive when he or she graduates in 12th grade?
All students receive a U.S. high school diploma. Students with a native-level of Spanish are also encouraged to take the “bachillerato” exams which prepare them for entrance into Costa Rican universities.
What level of English does my child need to have to enter MBS?
Preschool – children entering preschool do not need to have any English. If they have not achieved the level of English required for performing in academic classes all day when they have reached 1st grade, they will be placed in English Language Learning classes at an additional cost. Elementary students must be no more than two grade levels below the standards in English in order to be accepted. Middle and High School students that are not fluent in English are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but it can be difficult for students in these levels to adapt to the high level of English.
I don’t speak English very well. Will I be able to support my child academically?
Many of our teachers are bilingual. If you need to communicate with one of our teachers that is not bilingual, he or she will request help from another staff member.
What is included in the tuition?
The tuition includes all textbooks, workbooks, computer lab fees and basic school material throughout the year, a vision or hearing exam, individual and class photos, accident insurance with Instituto Nacional de Seguros (which covers up to ¢2,000,000.00 yearly), and medical emergency services. Preschool fees also include snacks and lunch. In other levels, the lunch program is optional and carries an additional cost. K3, K4, and Preparatory fees include swimming lessons once a week at a nearby swimming pool. 1st grade also has swimming lessons in the first semester, and the fees are covered.
Are discounts or financial aid available?
Marian Baker School does not currently offer any scholarships or financial aid. Families enrolling more than one child in the same school year are eligible for a discount on the youngest children. Alumni are also eligible for a discount. Please inquire to receive more information.
What payment options exist?
We ask families to pay 60% of the annual tuition before July 15 and 40% before January 15. However, these payments can be made over more installments if they are agreed upon before the child begins classes. Please contact the business office for more information about options available.
Marian Baker School is a small school. How will the small school setting affect the social opportunities for my child?
Grade levels are grouped together for Physical Education classes three times a week, for recess, and for various activities throughout the year. Middle and High School students are also mixed with students from other grade levels for elective classes. As a result, your child forms friendships with students both in their own class and in other grade levels.
