Character Education Program

Character Education is a process in which all the significant people in a child’s life have an impact. Even though parents and home life are the pillars, teachers and school life also have an impact on the moral, emotional and social development. As a way to organize and guide our interventions in these areas we offer the following programs:

School Wide Program: Value of the Month

Preschool

Elementary

Middle School &
High School

School Wide Program: Value of the Month

As part of our moral development program, teachers will be reinforcing a value each month in their classes with different activities and discussions. Parents are encouraged to reinforce the Value of the Month in their homes. Below you will find ideas on how to reinforce the Value of the Month at your home with your children; you will also find other resources to consult more options.

The first and best way to teach any value to your child or teenager is through modeling.
“Be a role model to your children.”

Preschool

Homeroom teachers constantly promote and enforce respectful behaviors trough direct intervention and modeling in and outside the classroom. They also organize projects, and read stories where different values are discussed.

Elementary

Elementary grades have a weekly, yearlong Values Class. This is a character education class where different values and life skills are discussed. The curriculum of the Values Class is flexible because it adapts to the need of each class.

Some of the areas or topics addressed in the Values Class are:

  1. Self Esteem: Activities to raise self esteem, being able to recognize positive traits in themselves and others.

  2. Emotional Intelligence: Recognizing and expressing feelings, developing empathy and assertiveness.

  3. Values.

  4. Life Skills: Refusing peer pressure, resolving conflicts, developing social-friendship skills, dealing with bullying.

  5. Health Topics: Drug abuse prevention, sex education, good nutrition and healthy habits. Development of healthy friendships and family relationships.

If you want to know specifically what your child is learning in the Values Class or have any suggestions please talk to the counselor, Ms. Harnecker.

Middle School and High School

Middle School and High School have a Homeroom Program where homeroom teachers, in conjunction with the counselor, address topics in three different areas:

  1. Group and School Integration Activities: This consists of community building activities organized by the students. They put in practice organizational, project management, and leadership skills.
  1. Life Skills and Health Topics: These vary according to the needs and interests of the students. They can include: study skills, time management, conflict resolution skills, healthy habits (sleeping habits, nutrition,
sex education, risky behavior prevention, drug abuse prevention, etc).

  1. Social-Environmental-Current Events Awareness: To promote awareness and critical thinking students research and discuss social/environmental problems
that humankind is facing around the world.
